I draw maps professionally for print publication (and sometimes for the web). All done on a Mac, as is the standard for graphics work.

Maybe the best way of looking at the way I draw maps is that I still like to play. I come up with ideas (some work, some don't) that stem from still being a kids at heart. Maps, even those for professional uses should remain fun...

Professionally, I design land development projects and "draw" them in AutoCAD using coordinate geometry. Since I was a kid, I have drawn street and topographic maps of imaginary cities (some of which I have posted in the photo gallery) So my childhood hobby has become a career. Also, I draw boundary (cadastral) maps of sectionalized land.

i draw maps, city maps just for fun. I really don't know what style it is, however i know it falls into the planning category. You dont see very many maps that show parking lot spaces and tress unless in those planned out maps, or sketches. I'll shiow some of mt earlier work and other styles of maps a used top draw.

What you do is very similar to what we get from the architects. Their plans are much more artistic, which are very colorful and show trees, rec centres, bike paths, and other detail that I am not concerned with. Have you considered doing this for a living? It's obvious you have a knack for it.

i have but thought that it might take away the fun if i got too technical. I think i will keep evolving my maps until the truely get techincal.

I'm curious, am i getting map making mixed up with architicts? What do architects do???

Architects normally design houses, buildings, and site plans integrating landscape architecture, engineering plans, and a boundary or topographic survey. Theirs is considered the more "artistic" discipline of land development. That also means that engineers and surveyors often get frustrated with architects because we're always telling them "that won't fit, that won't work, you need to set the house back from the right-of-way 20 feet", etc.
